How to Clean Pilates Equipment Without Damaging It
Pilates equipment is touched by bare hands, feet and faces all day, so it gets cleaned often. The bigger risk is cleaning it too hard. Strong solvents can dry out vinyl, dull a varnished frame and leave residue on rails that the carriage then rolls through. A gentle, consistent routine keeps apparatus looking right far longer than an occasional deep scrub.
What should you clean reformer upholstery with?
Mild soap and warm water on a soft cloth handles most daily cleaning. Wring the cloth well, wipe the surface, then dry it with a second cloth so moisture does not sit in the seams. Before using any sanitizing product, check the care guide for your brand, since upholstery materials differ between makers.
Know which upholstery you have
Each brand in our range uses its own covering. The right cleaning product depends on which one sits on your machine:
- BASI Systems: orthopaedic padding under non-slip antibacterial vinyl, described as hospital-grade on the Compact Reformer.
- Peak Pilates: Boltaflex vinyl, black as standard across its chairs and barrels.
- Elina Pilates: a synthetic leather developed for its own equipment, laid over high-density EVA foam.
Light colors show marks sooner than black or grey. Studios choosing a paler finish should plan on wiping more often rather than using stronger products.
Handles, loops and straps
Accessories vary more than upholstery does. Non-porous neoprene handles wipe down quickly between clients. Rubber and nylon rope handles with a criss-cross grip are also easy to sanitize.
Fabric takes longer. Cotton webbed foot loops and felt-lined double loops absorb sweat, so they need washing rather than a quick wipe. Follow the label for each one. Sheepskin loops and hanging straps need the gentlest handling of all. Leather straps should stay dry and be wiped only lightly. Some studios give regular clients their own loops or handles.
Wood frames, aluminium rails and springs
Elina protects its maple frames with a waterproof varnish. Even so, wood should get a barely damp cloth followed by a dry one, never a soaking. Aluminium rails and stainless steel parts clean the same way. Keep rails free of grit and residue, since the carriage wheels roll over every trace of it. Only apply a lubricant if the care guide for your model calls for one.
Springs need no cleaning products at all. What they can do is mark upholstery when a coil rests against a pad. A spring sleeve slides over a spring to keep the coils off the covering.
What does a good between-client routine look like?
A short routine of two or three minutes covers it. Wipe every surface that skin touched, starting with the headrest and shoulder rests, then the carriage, footbar and handles. Set fabric loops aside for washing and swap in a clean pair. Finish with a dry cloth so the next client never lies on a damp pad.
